Versace Eros Flame Review

Versace Eros Flame is a flanker to the wildly popular Versace Eros, adding a few new notes to take the familiar DNA and change things up a bit. But how does it compare to the original? That’s what we’re here to uncover in the review of Versace Eros Flame.

Brand & Perfume History

Versace is a fashion house that was created by Gianni Versace and rose to prominence in the late 70s/80s. Garnering a celebrity following early on, Versace decided to move into perfumes in 1981.

Since then the house has released fragrances for both men and women, with Versace Eros being one of their most popular lines for men.

The original Eros was released in 2012 and was a huge hit. Eros Flame was released 6 years later in 2018 and was again a smash hit, changing the direction of the fragrance and adding brand new notes.

Perfume Story

Wanting to change things up a bit with their Eros line, Versace brought in perfumer Olivier Pescheux to create a new eros all about contrasts – hot and cold, spicy and sweet, shadow and light. The result was the use of bright and fresh opening facets with warm and inviting base elements.

Perfume Bottle & Presentation

The bottle of Versace Eros Flame is the exact same as the others in the Eros line, except a fiery red in color. It’s a squat, square bottle with the trademark Medusa Head front and center and a gold cap. The cap is also adorned with a Medusa head.

Spray-wise, it’s a great sprayer giving a nice even mist every time.

Our Thoughts

The original Eros was a stellar scent in itself, and it’s hard to improve upon. It had everything you’d need for a great nighttime frag – performance, a unique attention-grabbing scent, and playful nature. Versace Eros Flame feels like a grown-up version of the original Eros to me, keeping the sweetness of the legendary original but making it a bit less playful and more serious.

I like it. Whilst it’s not a love, it is a really good scent and if you’re looking for compliments left, right, and center, you could do much worse than this.

How many sprays are required?

In terms of how you should spray Versace Eros Flame, it’s quite a strong fragrance and the sweetness can get quite cloying if you aren’t careful.

In normal day-to-day wear, you can get away with 2-3 squirts and be set. Colder weather – which is what Eros Flame is really made for – means you can go a bit heavier on the squirts, so 3-5.

You should probably avoid this on warmer days since the sweetness doesn’t work with the heat very well. If you are going to give it a wear in the heat, go low on the spritzes, so 1 or 2.

Top Notes

Mandarin Orange

Black Pepper

Wild Mountain Rosemary

The opening of Eros Flame is quite aromatic, with a mix of herby and citrus facets such as rosemary and lemon. You immediately get the citrus feeling from the original with the orange, but this is much brighter thanks to the addition of the chinotto accord and lemon. The chinotto accord is an exotic fruit that is incredibly fruity.

On top of these citruses lies a sharp black pepper and fragrant rosemary which adds a hint of spiciness. This isn’t over the top though and the opening is over quite fast – less than 5 minutes.

Heart Notes

Pepperwood Geranium

The mid of Eros Flame is much cleaner than the original. This is thanks to the floral facets such as geranium. The pepper note carries on through to keep the spiciness, but I also start getting the sweeter facets from the base coming through in the mid.

Base Notes

Tonka Bean

Texas Cedar

The base of Eros Flame is where all of the excitement is at. A wonderful sweet combination of vanilla as the star and tonka bean supporting is the main attraction, with the vanilla being really nice.

To add some depth and woody touch, the sandalwood and cedar keep the fragrance masculine. Along with the woody facets you have the patchouli and oakmoss to add an earthy facet that just helps bring everything together.

The sillage of Eros Flame is just as good as the original – you’re going to have a sweet and slightly spicy trail lingering behind you for a good few feet whilst this is in its main phase. Absolutely no complaints here.

The longevity of Eros Flame is also great – it’s designed to cling on to you and last. This is thanks to that massively sweet base, as the thicker sweet facets help it to stick to the skin and last. Whilst it won’t be projecting the entire time, overall it does last a really long time – you’ll get between 12-16 hours in total.

Eros Flame is one of those fragrances that can potentially fill up a room with just two sprays. For many people, it becomes a very potent fragrance and it’s worth checking out how the projection works for you with your skin.

In general, you can expect well above average projection for at least a few hours, with Eros Flame slowly becoming more of a skin scent.

Target Market

Eros Flame is aimed towards men with its spicy facets like pepper and rosemary, as well as the woods like cedar. It would be quite hard for a woman to wear this, but if they were bold enough they could maybe get away with it thanks to those sweet facets.

Age-wise, slightly older men can get away with this better than the original, as this one is more serious and more mature than the original Eros. Anyone from the age of 21 could get away with this, as long as they like sweeter fragrances.

When to Wear

Eros Flame is a great fragrance for casual wear in the colder months. The sweetness really gets amped up when it’s colder and the sillage smells incredible. Evening & night events are also a good shout for spraying some Eros Flame on, as it is quite attention-grabbing and will last the whole night thanks to the performance.

Hot weather should be avoided as the vanilla and tonka can easily become cloying.

Individuality-wise, Eros Flame is quite unique in its combination of different facets. There’s no doubt that it’s an interesting frag, as you get a blend of almost amber-like stickiness, fresh orange, some spicy facets, woody facets – and a whole lot more to smell.

You will be hard-pressed to find someone wearing something that is in the same ballpark, and Flame is even that different from the original release that you could probably smell unique even against that!

Value For Money

But is Versace Eros Flame good if you want to smell great on a budget? I think yes. You can easily find this at discounters, with some sites selling a 100ml bottle for under £50/$65. This is a very good value purchase considering it’s going to last you for ages and smells pretty damn great!

Pros & Cons

  • Good value for money
  • Solid performance
  • Interesting combo of facets
  • Great vanillic sillage
  • Easy reach for colder weather

  • Can be seen as a generic smell
  • Doesn’t work well in summer

Versace Eros Parfum

The amped-up version of the original, the parfum is the latest release in the line and amps the fresh facets such as the orange whilst also amping up the spicy facets. Don’t worry, the super sweet drydown is still there! If you want a more playful version of Eros Flame, try the parfum of the edp.

Paco Rabanne 1 Million

Whilst being quite old, 1 Million still stands up as a spicy sweet frag that people love. More shouty than Eros Flame but in the same vibe, you’ve got the trademark cinnamon and citrus opening with a slightly sweet drydown. It’s also got probably the most recognisable bottle in the game.

Our Verdict

If you love Versace Eros but want a more adult version of it, you should definitely give Eros Flame a try. It encompasses all of the good stuff of the original whilst just tweaking it enough to be its own fragrance.
