YSL Black Opium Perfume Review

Yves Saint Laurent, or as most of us know it, YSL, is a luxury fashion brand founded by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé in 1961. The YSL brand is known for its high-end fashion products, including clothing, accessories, handbags, shoes, and, of course, fragrances.

YSL was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century, known for his innovative designs and groundbreaking contributions to the fashion industry. He is credited with popularizing several iconic fashion trends, including the legendary tuxedo suit for women.

Today, Yves Saint Laurent is owned by the French luxury goods company Kering, and continues to produce the most high-end fashion products sold in stores and boutiques all over the world. The YSL brand is widely recognized for its timeless and sophisticated designs, as well as its commitment to quality and craftsmanship – and its famous Black Opium eau de parfum.

Yves Saint Laurent History

Yves Saint Laurent was a French fashion designer who, along with his partner Pierre Bergé, founded YSL back in 1961. He was born in Algeria in 1936 but moved to Paris to pursue his interest in fashion at a young age, and soon began working for Christian Dior.

In 1957, Saint Laurent was appointed head of the House of Dior at the young age of 21, but was fired from the position just two years later. However, this bump in the road didn’t deter him… in fact, just four years later he and Bergé founded the Yves Saint Laurent fashion brand, which quickly became one of the most iconic and influential brands in the fashion industry.

Throughout his career, he was known for his innovative designs and groundbreaking contributions to the fashion world.

In addition to his work in fashion, Saint Laurent was also an advocate for social and political causes. Life wasn’t easy for the fashion genius. He was openly gay and struggled with addiction and depression throughout his life.

Although he passed away in 2008 at the age of 71, his legacy continues to live on through his designs and the enduring influence of the Yves Saint Laurent brand. Today, this is one of the most well-known and respected luxury fashion brands in the world.

Perfume History

YSL Black Opium is the signature scent of the Yves Saint Laurent brand. It was first launched in 2014, as a new addition to the Opium fragrance line that was first introduced back in 1977. The fresh scent was created by perfumers Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp, and Honorine Blanc.

Black Opium is known for its bold and seductive aroma, a unique blend of sweet and spicy notes, which creates a distinctive and alluring eau de parfum.

The name “Black Opium” was meant to evoke the same sense of mystery and allure that the original Opium fragrance did when it was first introduced back in the 1970s. The fragrance has been marketed as a unique and beautiful eau de parfum for modern and confident women who want to make a statement.

Since its launch, Black Opium has become one of YSL’s most popular fragrances and has spawned some equally popular variations and limited editions. It is no wonder that it has made such an impact and won several awards in the industry.

YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum Story

The story of YSL Black Opium begins with the original Opium fragrance, which was introduced by Yves Saint Laurent in 1977. Opium was an instant success and became one of the most iconic fragrances of the 20th century. It became famous across the world for its bold, daring and exciting scent, blending oriental spices with floral and woody notes.

In 2014, YSL introduced its new fragrance, Black Opium, which was meant to be the more modern interpretation of the original. It was created by a team of perfumers, who wanted to capture the unique sense of allure that made the original Opium so popular.

The fragrance features top notes of adrenaline rich coffee and pink pepper, giving it its own distinctive aroma. The heart notes of jasmine, vanilla, and orange blossom add a little bit of sweetness, while the base notes of patchouli and cedar cashmere wood give it a warm, woody and slightly wintery finish.

Since its introduction, the award-winning parfum has been popular for its long-lasting scent and unique and distinct scent. It is now a firm favorite among women who want a fragrance that is both bold and sophisticated. Other popular versions of the scent include Black Opium Extreme, Black Opium Intense and Black Opium Neon.

Perfume Bottle & Presentation

The YSL Black Opium perfume bottle and presentation is sleek, sophisticated, and modern. It comes in a black glass bottle that is designed to resemble a sparkling night sky. It is adorned with silver sparkles, which give it a shimmery and gloriously glamorous appearance.

The famous Black Opium logo is embossed on the front of the bottle in shiny silver letters featuring the iconic YSL letters arranged in a circular pattern. The overall effect is one of sophistication and glamour, with a touch of sassiness and edginess.

The bottle sits inside in a sleek black box, also adorned with sparkles with the YSL logo prominently displayed on the front of the box, along with the name “Black Opium”. This is presented to the world as luxurious and stylish, reflecting the bold and confident spirit of the fragrance – and its wearer.

Overall, it’s sophisticated, glamorous and sleek but with a touch of edge and sass. The black and silver color scheme, along with the glittering sparkles, create a sense of mystery and sensuality.

Our Thoughts

Personally, I love a strong, sweet smell and this is one of my absolute favourites. It might not be the fresh scent I’d choose to wear during the day, but for a night out on the town, it’s perfect. I’m not the only one who thinks it smells amazing either. This strong scent, with its irresistible opening notes of black coffee and white flowers, has got me so many compliments.

This beautifully sweet yet strong scent is one of my favorite fragrances for when I go out out!

How many sprays are required?

The number of sprays you need depends on your own personal preference and the occasion. The general guideline would be 1-2 sprays of the fragrance on the pulse points (wrists, neck, and behind the ears). This should be enough to create a subtle but long-lasting scent that should last throughout the day or evening.

However, this is a strong and long-lasting fragrance, so a little will go a long way. If you go over the top with the fragrance, it can be overwhelming and you certainly don’t want to be giving anyone a headache. It’s probably best to start with a small amount and gradually build up to a level that suits your personal taste and the occasion.

If you’re applying the fragrance for a date night or a special occasion, you may want to apply a bit more to make sure that it lasts throughout the evening. However, you need to use your own judgement and apply the fragrance in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Notes

Top notes: Pear, Pink Pepper and Orange Blossom

Middle notes: Coffee, Jasmine, Bitter Almond and Licorice

Base notes: Vanilla Recline, Patchouli, Cashmere Wood and Cedar.

Performance

Sillage

YSL Black Opium has a pretty strong sillage, which means that it has a long-lasting and noticeable trail of fragrance that lingers in the air for a while after the wearer has passed by. Most wearers would generally describe it as being moderate to heavy, depending on how much is applied and how it reacts with their skin chemistry.

Longevity

Most people find the longevity of YSL Black Opium to be quite good, as it is a long-lasting fragrance that can last for several hours on the skin. However, the exact longevity depends on a number of factors, such as skin type, body chemistry, and the amount you spray.

Personally, I have found that it lasts for up to 8-10 hours on the skin, which is pretty impressive compared to other fragrances. This means that it can easily last through a good night out without needing an extra spritz along the way.

If you want to maximize the longevity of YSL Black Opium, I recommend you apply it to clean, moisturized skin and avoid rubbing the fragrance in. Additionally, for added lasting power, as is the case with most perfumes, it’s best to apply the fragrance to pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and behind the ears, as these areas tend to be warmer and can help to activate the fragrance.

Projection

YSL Black Opium has a famously strong projection, which means that it has the ability to project its scent and fill a room with its fragrance – so you will certainly be noticed. I would generally describe the projection to be moderate to heavy, depending on how much is applied and how it reacts with your skin chemistry.

Target Market

British model, Edie Campbell has promoted this beautiful scent – and it’s clear to see why she was chosen. The fragrance is targeted towards bold and alluring women who are looking for a matching scent. The target market is typically women who range between their 20s to 40s, although in all fairness, it can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to make a statement.

It is particularly popular among mature women who prefer sweet and spicy scents, as it combines fruity top notes with floral and woody base notes to create a complex and intriguing aroma… giving the wearer an air of mystery. The addition of coffee and vanilla notes gives it a warm and cozy feel which also makes it perfect for cooler wintery months and evening wear.

This YSL classic is also known for its edgy and rock-inspired marketing, with advertisements that highlight its rebellious spirit. As such it tends to appeal to women who are confident and daring and who want their perfume to reflect their individuality and personality.

When to Wear

This is all about sweet sensuality, making it perfect for a date night. However, it is a versatile fragrance that can be worn in a variety of settings. Personally, I think it is best suited for evening wear and winter nights out – maybe your work Christmas party. The warm and spicy notes in the fragrance make it a great choice for fall and winter, while the bold and attention-grabbing scent is perfect for a night out on the town.

Individuality

Black Opium is a fragrance perfectly designed to evoke a real sense of individuality and self-expression. It has become famous for its bold and attention-grabbing scent profile, which includes a unique blend of fruity, floral, spicy, and woody notes.

The combination of these notes means that it comes across as both sophisticated and edgy… the perfect choice for anyone who wants a fragrance that reflects their edgy style. #

Its whole marketing strategy encourages women to embrace their individuality and stand out from the crowd. As such, it is often associated with rock and roll… and a hint of rebelliousness.

Value For Money

There’s no denying that this is a premium fragrance, which means that it is more expensive than many other fragrances on the market. However, it does use high-quality ingredients and has a lot of staying power – that, along with its bold projection make it pretty decent value if you’re looking for an expensive-smelling perfume that will last all day – or night.

While buying a bottle of YSL Black Opium may be a little costlier than some other fragrances, its long-lasting scent and top-end ingredients make it a worthwhile purchase… or you could simply ask your other half to buy you an early birthday or Christmas present!

Cons

However, there are some things you may want to consider before forking out for a bottle of this expensive scent:

  1. Pricey: There’s no denying that this is a premium fragrance, which means that it is more expensive than many other fragrances on the market.
  2. Strong projection: The fragrance really does have a strong sillage and projection, which means that it can be overpowering if applied too heavily or worn in inappropriate settings. Subtlety and minimalism are key.
  3. Not suitable for everyone: Because it is bold and daring, it may not be to everyone’s taste, and some people may find it too strong or too sweet.
  4. Not always suitable to wear during the day: Because of its strong projection and edgy scent, it may not always be suitable for all daytime settings, particularly in more conservative work environments.

The whole Opium eau de parfum fragrance family has been created for us women who like to make a statement. When I go out at night, I want to smell every bit as good as I look… and I know that when I am wearing the Black Opium eau de parfum that I will.
